2023: Foundation & Regional Collaboration

In 2023, I joined a volunteer initiative supporting the Laos National Baseball Team as they prepared for the Asian Games. Inspired by the story of how a Korean coach introduced baseball to underserved youth in rural Laos and helped build the country's national team, my peers and I wanted to explore how sports and cultural exchange could create meaningful social impact.

After connecting with the team's coach through our church, we traveled to the Vientiane Baseball Center in Laos, bringing clothing, essential supplies, and snacks collected in South Korea. We participated in training sessions, spent time with the athletes, and introduced elements of Korean cheering culture to encourage and support the team.

Later that year, the Laos National Baseball Team celebrated a historic milestone, securing its first-ever international victory against Singapore and receiving a popularity award from Asian journalists. Being part of their journey showed me how sports can transcend cultural and language barriers, bringing people together through shared passion, perseverance, and community.

2024: Facility Expansion & Core Growth

Following my first volunteer trip to Laos in 2023, I returned in 2024 with a new goal: bringing people together through Korean food and cultural exchange. Having witnessed the economic challenges faced by local athletes and their enthusiasm for Korean culture, I collaborated with friends and older students to organize the K-Food Kart Project in Vientiane.

Through multiple Zoom meetings with local students and baseball players, we developed a menu featuring popular Korean treats, including dalgona (Korean sugar candy). We planned the event from scratch, organized a crowdfunding campaign, purchased ingredients and equipment, and traveled to Laos to set up and operate the food cart in temperatures reaching 40°C (104°F).

Although the food cart operated for just one day, the project involved months of planning, fundraising, and collaboration across borders. More importantly, it gave me the opportunity to build genuine friendships with local university students and baseball players while sharing Korean culture. What started as a simple food cart became a meaningful experience in entrepreneurship, teamwork, and cross-cultural connection.

2026: Global Recognition & Competition

In 2026, I returned to supporting the Laos National Baseball Team with a new challenge in mind. As the team prepared for the Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan, rising participation costs and limited funding made competing internationally increasingly difficult. My friends and I initially hoped to support the team's training and fundraising efforts, but when their Asian Games participation became financially unfeasible, we began exploring a different opportunity.

Rather than letting financial barriers prevent these athletes from experiencing international competition, we joined efforts to develop the Dream Cup, an international baseball tournament designed for emerging baseball nations that lack opportunities to compete on the global stage.

The Dream Cup aims to bring together developing baseball programs, particularly those without official world rankings, to promote international competition, athletic development, cultural exchange, and mutual respect. Beyond providing athletes with valuable playing experience, the tournament seeks to strengthen baseball communities and create pathways toward future participation in major international competitions.
